Bignon. 46. 1864, non Mart, ex Meisn. Guayana is the center of speciation of this genus and five of its species are known from the Highland. It is characterized by white "Pithecoctenium-type" flowers with a bend in the corolla tube, truncate cupular calyces, trifid tendrils, terete branchlets, absence of interpedolar glandular fields, and oblong or elliptic woody-valved fruits. It ranges from Costa Rica through the Guianas and Bolivia and most of Brazil.
