Discussion:

Type. Prope Ega, ad fluvium Amazonum, in svlvis siccis, Poeppig (B).

The two collections from Costa Rica, Holt & Iltis 660 and 965, agree with subsp sylvaticum because of their pale-purplish basal sheaths and narrower leaf blades. They are so far the only collections of this taxon from Central America.
