  • Discussion

    4. Arrabidaea japurensis (de Candolle) Bureau & K. Schumann, Mart. Fl. Bras. 8(2): 65. 1896. Tabebuia japurensis DC, Prodr. 9: 214. 1845. Type. Brazil, Amazonas, Martius sn (M, fragm. G-DC). The first Guayana upland collection of this species is Tillett & Tillett 45684 from 470 m, Kamarang River, Upper Mazaruni River Basin, Guyana. Except for the pubescence, this collection is remarkably similar to A. C. Smith 2921, reported previously by Sandwith as A. egensis, thus providing additional circumstantial evidence that these two species may be mere pubescence variants. The generic placement of A. japurensis remains moot but it now appears that Scobinaria is not adequately separated. Whether Scobinaria verrucosa (Standi.) Seib. of Central America and the lower slopes of the Andes is specifically distinct from the nonverrucose fruited Guayanan and central Amazonian plant also remains an open question pending more fruiting collections.
