This genus is especially well-characterized by its stipitate oblong-elliptic or suborbicular or ellipsoidal fruit. The ovary likewise is stipitate and the disc conical. Its yellow or cream flowers are of the "Anemopaegma-type.'' The genus occurs throughout continental tropical America. Four species have been collected in the Guayana Highland.
