Pleonotoma is unmistakable on account of its acutely tetragonal branchlets and biternate to multiply compound leaves. It has trifid tendrils and lacks interpetiolar glandular fields. The inflorescence is a raceme and the ''Anemopaegma-type"" (rarely elongate salverform) flowers are white to light yellow with a well developed disc and cupular 5-denticulate calyx. The fruit is linear to linear oblong. It ranges from Guatemala to Brazil and Bolivia.
