Type. P. maximiliana (Mart, ex DC.) Bur. ex K. Schum. = P. unguiculata (Veil.) A. Gentry.
This genus is characterized by its trifid uncate tendrils, magenta "Anemopaegma-type" corolla and deeply 5-dentate calyx. The fruit is said to dehisce perpendicular to the septum as in Tecomeae but it is closer to Bignonieae in all other features. One of its two species is endemic to the Guayana Highland; the other, P. unguiculata (Veil.) A. Gentry, to eastern Brazil.
