This genus is characterized by its large thin calyx, usually trifid tendrils, lack of interpetiolar glandular fields, a deep purple corolla adapted for hummingbird pollination, and a long extremely compressed fruit. It occurs from Belize to Brazil, a single species being known from the Guayana Highland.
