Gaylussacia was last monographed by Sleumer (1967). It is a genus of about 48 species, 35 of which are found in southeastern Brazil, 7 in eastern North America, and the remaining six scattered throughout northern South America. One species has been described from Guayana.
Gaylussacia is closely related to Vaccinium, being separated from it basically on the basis of the 10-locular, drupaceous fruit.
