Monographs Details: Notopora
Authority: Maguire, Bassett. 1978. The botany of the Guayana Highland--part X. Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 29: 1-288.
Discussion:Notopora contains five species which are wholly endemic to eastern Venezuela. The genus was last reviewed by Steyermark (1967). An Enghsh version of the key of the original study is here provided.
The relationships of Notopora are quite obscure. Its most significant characteristic, anthers which dehisce through extrorse pores, is found nowhere else in the family. A. C. Smith (1932) felt that the genus was of ancient derivation and that it could not "be associated with any other modern group in a discussion of descent.' Pollen morphology (discussed and illustrated in greater detail below), however, suggests that Notopora m a y be alhed with Orthaea, and to a lesser extent with Satyria.
