Family:Ericaceae
Scientific Name:Sphyrospermum
Description:Distribution and Ecology - The genus Sphyrospermum consists of about 18 species generally distributed in higher montane regions from southern Mexico to Bolivia and eastward to Surinam and Trinidad. The widespread species, S. majus, also occurs in Haiti. Ten species are endemic to Ecuador which seems to be the center of distribution. Four species have now been collected in the Guayana Highland area.

Discussion:Sphyrospermum is most closely related to Vaccinium being easily distinguished from it by the characters given in the key. It was most recently monographed by A. C. Smith (1933), although Sleumer (1941) provided a more up-to-date key.
