Discussion
Phthirusa nitens (Martius) Eichler, Mart. Fl. Bras. 5(2): 59. 1868. Loranthus nitens Mart, in Schult., Syst. 7: 150. 1829. A rarely collected species. Leaves ovate-acuminate, cinereo-glaucescent, at both faces nitidulous, the secondary nerves finely prominent above, midrib strongly prominulous beneath, impressed above, up to 8 cm long, 2 cm wide; spikes 3.5-7 cm long, solitary; the ternations are not wholly sessile, but mostly have a peduncle 1 mm long; some spikes have subsidiary ones, becoming subpanicled; middle bractlet very acute, twice longer than the two lateral ones, a relation only found in Struthanthus syringifolius Mart, as far as I know; staminate flower about 3 mm long, white; pistillate flower as long as the preceding one but slender, white; fruit orange, globose or nearly so, 8-9 mm long.
