Description:Latin Diagnosis - A priore differt characteribus foliis et floribus; foliis coriaceis, elliptico-lanceolatis, vulgo 9-14 cm longis, 4.5-6.0 cm latis, abaxiali nitidis, basi retusis, apicibus vulgo acutiusculis; petalis vulgo abaxiali centraliter hirsutis.

Distribution and Ecology - Distribution. Venezuelan Gran Sabana, particularly in the vicinity of Icabaru and the Cerro Guaiquinima on the Rio Paragua. VENEZUELA. Estado Bolivar: Especie arborea de tamaiio variable (30-10 m de alto). Flores blanco-cremosas, abundantes; a veces raices de sosten; especie extraordinariamente abundante en zona " a Cabrera" entre 1° y 2° Salto de Hacha; region de los rios Icabaru, Hacha, y cordillera sin nombre a 280° de las cabeceras del Rio Hacha; 450-850 m s.n.m.; selva pluvial o sabana natural; (Guyana venezolana), 29 Dec 1955, Bernardi 2683 (VEN); tree 10-20 m tall, flowers with yellow filaments and creamy perianth segments, leaves chartaceous, dark green, common 1/2 way up slopes, cumbre Cerro Guaiquinima, 750-840 m, 23 Jan 1977, Steyermark, Dunsterville & Dunsterville 113380 (NY); tree 15-18 m tall, leaves coriaceous, deep green above, gray-silvery below, perianth creamy yellow, cumbre de Cerro Guaiquinima, 1-2 km rio arriba del Salto Szczerbanari, 750 m alt, 20-25 Jan 1977, Steyermark & Dunsterville 113438 (holotype NY, isotype VEN); Pakaraimaea forest, trees averaging 15-20 m tall, all flowering, petals greenish-white, trees constantly with 2 or more trunks coming from base; observed as common all along road in upland plateau as far as 15.5 km from Icabaru, bordering rocky open savanna and upland forest, 450 m alt, 15 Dec 1978, Steyermark, Carreno E. & G. C. K. & E. Dunsterville 117745 (NY); seedlings only, radicle emerges first from "nutlet," last to appear is plumule, Quebrada de los Brasileros, 4 km E of Icabaru, 500 m alt, 26 Apr 1979, Maguire, Steyermark & Maguire 65553 (NY); coppicing trees producing clumps of many trunks (19 maximum counted), apparently reproducing by vegetative means only; dominating woodland-savanna ecotone and marginal forest, Quebrada de Los Brasileiros, 4 km E of Icabaru, Gran Sabana, 500 m alt, 26 Apr 1979, Maguire, Steyermark & Maguire 65554 (F, MO, K, US, NY, Leiden, VEN, AA); abundant coppicing trees, dominating woodland-savanna ecotone and marginal forest, 8 km along road to Sta.
