Type: AUSTRALIA. South Australia: Waterfall Gully, near Adelaide, in rock crevices, 16 Nov 1952, D. G. Catcheside 52.344 (hb. D.G.C.) (Fig. 1e, f).

Bartramia stricta sensu Catcheside, Mosses South Australia 282, fig. 168. 1980, non Brid.

Another Australian species in the section Strictidium, namely B. species B (Catcheside, 1980, p. 285), does not appear to be the same as B. compacta Homsch., judging from limited material of the latter from South Africa (N. S. Pillaus 3992, east slopes of Saddle between Lion's Head and Rump, Cape Peninsula, bm). This shows that B. compacta has no peristome and that the exothecial cells of the capsule are not coUenchymatous but are nearly uniformly thickened with only slight and concave enlargement at the angles, a few cells in the longitudinal strips between 1 the ridges having thin walls. Apparently, B. species B cannot be assigned to any species already named.
