Pilopogon lorentzii Fleisch., Hedwigia 50: 280. 1911;
Thysanomitrion lorentzii (Fleisch.) Fleisch., Nova Guinea 12(2): 13. 1913; Campylopus lorentzii (Fleisch.) W . Schultze-Motel, Willdenowia 3: 407. 1963.
Thysanomitrion ridleyi Dix., Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 51: 227. 1924; Campylopus ridleyi (Dix.) Manuel, Fed. Mus. L 26(2): 161. 1981.
A variety differing in leaf tips which abruptly taper into a hyaline, serrate awn. This variety has been found scattered through the range of C. exasperatus. Whether the varietal level should be maintained is doubtful, since piliferous and muticous leaves have been found along the same stem (cf. Frahm et al., 1985). The two varieties also seem to have the same substrate preferences and altitudinal range (the types of Thysanomitrion ridleyi (=C. exasperatus var. lorentzii) and Thysanomitrion abbreviatum (=C. exasperatus var. exasperatus) were collected at the same locality).
