Discussion:The discovery of this species from the central Philippines (Leyte Island) adds a new generic record to the Philippine moss flora. The very slender, julaceous and irregularly branched habit, coupled with the Ungulate leaves and pluripapillose laminal cells are unique among the local pleurocarps. Watanabe (1972) described the range to include "South Africa, Ceylon, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand." Its occurrence in the Philippines makes the distribution pattem less disjunctive. The same author added that in Japan, H. pseudo-triste has a wide occurrence in the wetter evergreen broadleaved forests. In the Philippines, it was collected from the wet, evergreen lowland rainforest at about 400 m above sea level.
