Discussion:

Plate I.

Although the Philippine collection was sterile, the somewhat squarrose leaves, the sheathing leaf bases that narrow into a subulate awn and the leaf areolation, all point to this weedy species of the Northem Hemisphere. The collection locality, Mt. Polis, is part of the northem highlands of Luzon long known to harbor a large number of north temperate species (Tan, 1984). Judging from the vegetative characters, the Philippine plants belong to var. grevilleanum Brid. (Nyholm, 1954).
