Orthotrichum erpodiaceum was described with no knowledge ofthe sporophytes. MuUer (1879) seemed to be uncertain even about the generic affinity. Large hexagonal upper leaf cells might indicate a relationship with O. diaphanum Brid. No safe judgment can, however, be made.
