Description:Genus Description - Plants in loose or dense, dull, pale- to yellow-green mats, sometimes tinged with brown. Stems simple to sparsely and irregularly branched, complanate-foliate to subjulaceous; pseudoparaphyllia filamentous. Leaves crowded, rigid, usually imbricate and ± contorted when dry, plane to concave, symmetric, oblong-ovate to nearly lingulate, abmptly acute or obtuse, sometimes apiculate; margins plane, entire or sermlate toward the apex; costa relatively stout, 2/3-3/4 the leaf length; cells short, rhombic, thick-walled, unipapillose over the lumen or sometimes smooth; alar cells strongly differentiated, quadrate, rectangular, or oblate-rectangular. Capsules strongly inclined, straight or slightly arcuate, ovoid to ellipsoidal, contracted below the mouth when dry; exothecial cells thin-walled; operculum obliquely short-rostrate.
