    Species Description - Caespitose annuals; culms erect, 4-25 cm tall, hirtellous or sparsely so. Leaves basal or from near base; blade 2.5- 15 cm X 0.6-2.5 mm. Inflorescences single congested turbinate heads of (3)4-9 spikelets subtended by 3 or 4 green involucral bracts, the longest 2-12 cm long; spikelets usually widely ovate, 3-6 X 1-3 mm, white. Hypogynous bristles absent. Achenes oblate to very widely obovate, 0.8-1.1 X 0.75-1.15 mm, stramineous to orangish brown or black, strongly transversely rugose; tubercle very shallowly triangular, 0.2-0.3 X 0.7—0.9 mm, occasionally with ends rounded or upturned.

    Distribution and Ecology - Open disturbed areas in moist, acid, sandy or peaty soils.
