    Species Description - Tufted perennials with descending rhizomes; culms 12- 40 cm tall, 0.7-0.9 mm wide, filiform, lateral from leaf axils, scapose. Leaves basal, green; sheath dilated, 3-5 cm long; blade 25-60 X 1.5-2 cm, constricted and petiole-like for basal 20-25% of length, the distal expanded portion linear, 3-veined, doubly plicate, the margins scabrous apically, otherwise smooth. Inflorescences each a terminal cluster of 3-7 sessile spikes subtended by reduced involucral bracts; spikes ovoid, 4-7.5 X 3-6 mm, the scales brown to reddish brown. Fruits broadly obovoid, 1.7-2 X 1-1.4 mm, stramineous to olive.

    Distribution and Ecology - Fr (Jan, Jul, Aug); forest, usually along streams.
