    Genus Description - Annuals or perennials, caespitose or rhizomatous; culms bearing leaves only basally. Leaves linear. Inflorescences from single, simple capitula to decompound, umbellate panicles, the inflorescence rays each subtended by a leaf-like bract, the ultimate inflorescence units comprising single spikelets or spikes or umbels of spikelets; spikelets simple, linear, narrowly elliptic, cylindrical, or ovate, composed of distichously arranged scales subtending flowers. Flowers bisexual (very rarely unisexual); perianth absent; stamens 1-3, hypogynous; stigmas 3. Achenes trigonous, the style base not persistent. Including Protocyperus, Pycreus, and Torulinium.
