The type is Californian. T h e variety (of the ssp. starckeana)
usually occurs in mixture with the typical expression of
the species, and it may be no more than a hybrid between P.
starckeana and s o m e other species. T h e operculum is usually
undifferentiated and the peristome absent, but a Californian
specimen (lkenberry 369, CANM) called to m y attention by
Terry Mcintosh has a weakly differentiated operculum and
rudimentary peristome teeth.
