Discussion
P. starckeana ssp. starckeana var. fosbergii (Bartr.) Zand., Novon 3: 92. 1993.
P. fosbergii Bartr., Bryologist 33: 18. 1930.
The type is Californian. T h e variety (of the ssp. starckeana) usually occurs in mixture with the typical expression of the species, and it may be no more than a hybrid between P. starckeana and s o m e other species. T h e operculum is usually undifferentiated and the peristome absent, but a Californian specimen (lkenberry 369, CANM) called to m y attention by Terry Mcintosh has a weakly differentiated operculum and rudimentary peristome teeth.
