    Species Description - Plants hght- or dark-green above, light- or dark-brown below. Stems often branched below; central strand usually Leaves flat, broadly concave, or occasionally weakly keeled, ligulate to oblong-lanceolate, rounded or broadly acute and sometimes apiculate by a single cell; margins plane or occasionally recurved (and sometimes denticulate) below; costa rarely strong, ending 2-5 cells below the apex or rarely percurrent, often covered ventrally toward the apex by subquadrate, papillose cells similar to the laminal cells or occasionally by short- or long-rectangular and weakly papillose or smooth cells, with 1 or 2 stereid bands; upper cells thin-walled, rarely thickened at the corners, isodiametric, with papillae small, low, simple or bifid, rarely large and granulose and scattered or crowded, generally 2-5 per cell. Dioicous. Perigonia at ends of short branches, gemmiform. Perichaetia terminal, the inner bracts ovate-lanceolate from a sheathing base. Setae elongate; capsules ovoid to ellipsoidal, short-necked; operculum rostrate; peristome none.
