    Species Description - Cespitose perennial; stems very slender, sharply trigonous, 2–5 dm, usually conspicuously twisted; spikelet ovoid, 2–8 mm, acute; scales firm, appressed, usually with brown sides, round or obtuse; bristles about equaling the tubercle; style trifid; achene trigonous, broadly obovoid, 1.1–1.5 mm; tubercle trigonous-subulate, half as long and wide as the achene. Swamps and bogs, chiefly near the coast; L.I. to Fla. and Tex. (E. simplex, misapplied)
