A widely distributed genus of about ten species best represented in tropical America and Africa. Two species have been introduced into Puerto Rico as cultivated plants; both have been reported as escaped at a few localities. The generic name commemorates Antonio M . Salvini (1653- 1729), an Italian professor of Greek.
