Description:Genus Description - Terrestrial; rhizome short, compact, ascending, with abundant tan scales; fronds medium-sized, monomorphic, crown-forming; stipe short, densely scaly; blade bipinnate-pinnatifid to barely tri-pinnate-pinnatifid, the segments small, rounded, strongly inrolled, subcoriaceous; veins free; sori round, exindusiate, protected by inrolled segment margin; spores bilateral with cristate perispore.
Discussion:Lectotype (first chosen by J. Smith?, Hist. fil. 169. 1875): Pleocosorus speciosissimus (Kunze) Moore [=Cheilanthes speciosissima Kunze].
Pleocosorus is a monotypic genus, very close to Polystichum, but distinguished from it by the lack of indusia, the inrolled, differentiated margin and non-mucronate segments.
