  • Description

    Description - Leaf-blades ligulate, subrounded and terminating in a stout dark spine, nearly 9 cm wide, serrate with black antrorse curved spines, very closely appressed-lepidote beneath. Scape erect, stout, ferruginous-tomentellous; scape-bracts (upper) reflexed, elliptic, serrate with black, antrorse spines, densely lepidote beneath. Inflorescence subdensely cylindric, bipinnate, 20 cm long, 5 cm in diameter, appressed-ferruginous-tomentellous throughout; branches suberect to spreading, 2-flowered, very short, all fertile but especially the highest with the terminal bracts changed to elongate spines with pulvinate bases. Floral bracts strongly asymmetric, much wider than long, bearing a dark suberect spine 21 mm long, enfolding the ovary, entire, the margins free from the rhachis; flowers 25 mm long without the petals; sepals strongly asymmetric, free, minutely mucronate; ovary stipitiform, 6 mm long, ferruginous-tomentellous.
