Description:Description - Leaves about 15 in a dense rosette, to 3 dm long; sheaths ovate, large; blades ligulate, broadly acute or rounded and apiculate, slightly narrowed toward base, 55 mm wide, obscurely serrate with minute spines. Scape erect, much shorter than the leaves; scape-bracts narrowly lanceolate, entire, membranaceous. Inflorescence compound to apex, wholly fertile, dense, subglomerate, red except the petals, glabrous; primary bracts small or minute; branches spreading, 3-15-flowered, slender, geniculate. Floral bracts nearly lacking; flowers sessile, polystichous, to 17 mm long. Sepals free, strongly asymmetric, emarginate, 4 mm long, unarmed, blue-spotted at apex; petals emarginate, ca 10 mm long, blue, bearing 2 fimbriate scales at base; ovary obovoid, 8 mm long, 5 mm in diameter; placentae apical; ovules caudate.
