    Species Description - Stems freely branching, slender but rigid, commonly with paired glands at the nodes; rhizome scarcely developed; lvs all submersed, linear, cuspidate to aristate, 5–10 cm × 1–3 mm, 3–9(–13)-veined, commonly with 1 or 2 rows of lacunar cells on each side of the midvein; stipular sheaths axillary, free, brown (white), 1–2 cm, becoming fibrous at the tip; winter-buds uncommon, sometimes with the inner lvs rolled into a hard, fusiform structure; peduncles mostly terminal and erect, 1–2 cm, slightly clavate; spike cylindric, 5–11 mm, with 2–4 whorls of fls; fr rarely produced, suborbicular, plump, 2.5–3 mm excluding the prominent 0.5 mm beak, obscurely or not at all keeled. Alkaline waters; Mass., Vt., and N.Y.
