Description:Description - Plant very variable, flowering to 6 dm high. Leaves about 30 in a broadly funnelform rosette, 15 dm in diamter; sheaths large, broadly elliptic, entire, covered with appressed dark brown scales; blades ligulate, broadly acute or rounded and apiculate, to 10 cm wide, green with spots of dark green, pale-lepidote, laxly serrate with broad spines 3 mm long. Scape short to long, stout, covered with a dark ferruginous wool; scape-bracts partially imbricate at times but never wholly covering the scape, very broadly elliptic, apiculate, laxly serrulate. Inflorescence about 100-flowered, 7-8 cm in diameter without the bracts; outer bracts broadly lance-triangular, 10-15 cm long, recurved toward apex, laxly serrulate, pale-lepidote. Floral bracts oblong, acute or obtuse, slightly shorter than the flowers, membranaceous, whitish, covered with a dense dark brown wool; flowers short-pedicellate, 30-35 mm long. Sepals free, asymmetric, broadly elliptic, apiculate, 12-18 mm long, whitish, lanate especially toward base; petals free, narrowly obovate, or oblong, rounded and apiculate, slightly exceeding the sepals, white or pale green toward apex, bearing 2 fimbriate scales at base; stamens included; ovary ellipsoid, epigynous tube large, funnelform; placentae apical; ovules obtuse.
