  • Family

    Moraceae

  • Scientific Name

    Helicostylis tovarensis (Klotzsch & H.Karst.) C.C.Berg

  • Discussion

The absence of collections from the middle part of Ecuador suggests the possibility of a gap in the distribution, similar to that in Sorocea trophoides. A recent collection, made from a shrub of 1-2 m tall, shows general similarities to Helicostylis tovarensis, but is clearly distinct in the small laminas (4-7 × 0.7-1.2 cm) and in the very shortly pedunculate staminate inflorescences. It almost certainly represents a distinct taxon, probably at the subspecific level: PERU. San Martin: Prov. Rioja, Dtto. Pardo Miguel, between Aguas Verdes and rd. to San Pablo, 1220 m, 23 Jun 1998 (tf), I. Sanchez V. et al. 9456 (BG).

  • Distribution

From Costa Rica to the Coastal Range of Venezuela and through the Andes to Bolivia; in montane or submontane forest; at ca. (400-)600-2000(-2500) m.
