Monographs Details: Amoreuxia gonzalezii Sprague & Riley
Authority: Poppendieck, Hans-Helmut. 1981. Cochlospermaceae. Fl. Neotrop. Monogr. 27: 1-34. (Published by NYBG Press)
Family:Bixaceae
Discussion:Morphologically, this species is intermediate between Amoreuxia wrightii (globose seeds) and A. palmatifida (leaves with 7-9 spathulate lobes, Fig. 6). The three collections which are tentatively classified here come from the northern part of the range of A. palmatifida, where there is apparently no contact with A. wrightii. Therefore it seems improbable that A. gonzalezii is a hybrid between the two other species. Rather the isolated occurrences, the differences in the indumentum of the seeds of the different populations, and the strong variability of seed characters in A. palmatifida suggest that these three populations have evolved in a parallel manner but independently of each other from A. palmatifida. More collections, especially of fruiting material, and studies in the field are necessary for a final decision of the status of this species.
