Description
Species Description - Stoloniferous and with a long rhizome, the stem 2-8 dm, naked or with one or 2 reduced lvs, sparsely long-setose, the peduncles commonly also hispid with blackish, gland-tipped hairs and somewhat stellate; herbage ± glaucous; basal lvs oblanceolate or narrowly elliptic, 3-14 cm (petiole included) × 6-20 mm, generally long-setose below (at least along the midrib) and on the margins toward the base, glabrous or nearly so above; lvs of the stolons much smaller and sometimes more hairy; heads 3-50 in a corymbiform, generally compact infl; invol 5-9 mm, hispid with blackish, generally gland-tipped hairs, slightly stellate-tomentose and sometimes also long-setose; achenes to 2 mm, truncate; 2n=27. Meadows, roadsides, and fields; native of Europe, established from N.B. and Me. to N.Y. and reputedly O. June-Aug. Thought to have originated by hybridization of no. 4 [Hieracium caespitosum Dumort.] with H. lactucella.
