    Species Description - Branching annual 1.5–8 dm; stem spreading-villous; lvs to 20 × 5 cm, the lower petiolate, the middle and upper sessile, scarcely or not at all decurrent; invol 3–4 cm, generally surpassed by the closely subtending ovate or lance-ovate lvs; achenes 6–8 mm; 2n=22. Waste places; native to the Mediterranean region, now sparingly established here and there in the U.S. and s. Can. May–Aug. (Centaurea b.)
