    Herb to 1/2 m. tall. Flowers 4-5 cm diam. Petals pale yellow, filaments yellow, anthers light orange, ovary light green, style purplish-red. Plant with bright yellow latex.

Main vegetation types of region: (l)wchapadanf decid-
uous to evergreen xeromorphic tree woodland (ncerra-
dao”) on tops & sides of sandstone plateaus & some
low flat land; (2) "tabuleiro11, deciduous low-tree
woodland (another type of ncerradaow) on upper parts
of rolling terrain; (3)"mata", closed, deciduous to
evergreen forest, in galleries; U>)ncaatlngan, open
deciduous forest on lower parts of rolling terrain;
(5)"varjao", scattered deciduous forest-type trees
on low flat land; ^"cocal", dense babagu palm
groves on Pamafba River terrace & some brook val-
leys. Dry season 4-5 months with almost no rain;
brooks intermittent. Annual fires & cattle grazing
in all areas. Some spots with dense secondary cha-
pada scrub ("carrasco"); much tabuleiro cleared to
form grassy pasture; much mata, caatinga & varjao
in shifting cultivation.
