• Georeferencing Method

  Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Interpreted this locality as: "left side road of the highway, 9 km from Valença to Guaibim (coast)". Using Google Maps -Satellite View, and Distance Measurement Tool, one small road in particular was identified which branches off to the left from the main Valença/Guaibim highway (BA-887, aka: "Av. Beira Mar") at almost exactly 9 km road distance from the edge of the town of Valença. Further evidence supporting this particular road being the one described are another collectors Lat/long coordinates for a very similarly described locality: "Km 9 da estrada Valença/Guaibim" (NY Site IRN: 36611) which are placed right along this same side road mentioned. Since no specific distance along the side road is indicated in this locality description, georeferenced to the point along this side road closest to the approximate midpoint of the road, measured from its intersection with BA-887 (at ca. 9 km from Valença) to the place where it terminates north of the city of Guaibim, in Mun. Valença, Bahia. Used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure a straight line from intersection (-13.3207869 -39.0014219) to terminus (-13.2381492 -38.9637208), then halved that distance to approximate the location of the geographic midpoint. Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find coordinates for the point along the unnamed side road nearest to its geographic midpoint. Input coordinates, linear extent (distance from the selected coordinates alongside the road to the farthest extent of the road, 5417.04), and measurement error (0.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to the Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: River, stream, road, path).
