Shrub to 1.5 m. tall with leathery, evergreen
Ivs., dark, shiny above, lighter below. Flowers
red waxy, the expanded base fleshy. Stamens (10)
with short white or pink filaments; anthers
brown, very long pointed. Inner face of spread-
ing perianth segments dark purple. Style white
to red above; ovary green. Abundant.On small
rise with shrubs at edge of ciénaga (wet area).
