Description
Herbs ranging from about 20 centimeters tall to over 1 m tall, stems stout; basal leaves mostly withering now; stem with downward pointing stiff hairs; flowers yellow. Stem hairs penetrating the skin and irritating. Whole plant with mustard-like odor. This population occupies a narrow strip on the west side of Riverside Boulevard from just south of west 68th street to West 65th Street. It consists of dozens of plants (25 observed in iNaturalist). Some of the plants are in sidewalk cracks, some in tree pits, some on the edge a construction site along the fence, some around a playground. Since it is an annual and there are so many of them and scattered over such a large area in different situations, it is doubtful that they were all introduced this year. On this basis, it is probable that the population has existed undetected for at least one year at this site and perhaps longer. This is the first record for New York City. Phenology of specimen: Flower and Fruit.
