An approximately 3.5 acre field, owned by Mike and Tami Paris, occurs about
3.5 miles south of Ottumwa. It was probably crop ground years ago based on
being gently sloping, on a ridge top and dominated by Andropoaon virainicus.
The field also appears to be crop ground in black and white aerial photography
from the late 1930’s. It is on the Southern Iowa Drift Plain.
We found at least 70 genets in bloom during a casual survey—there are
probably 100 to 200 (perhaps more) genets. The petals and sepals are white,
while the lips are white with green centers. The collection comes from a
gentle, west-facing slope. Spiranthes lacera is associated with Achillea
millefolium. Ambrosia artemisiifolia. Aster pilosus. Daucus carota. Diodia teres.
Juniperus virginiana. Kummerowia stioulacea. Pasoalum setaceum. Plantaao
lanceolata. Rudbeckia hirta. Ruellia humilis. Solidaao nemoralis. Solidaao
rigida. Toxicodendron radicans. Tridens flavus and Trifolium pratense.
