55.71 ’ W. Long. Steuben; Eagle Hill, Humboldt Field
Research Institute, 4 miles due south-southeast of
junction of Smithville Road and U.S. Route 1. West
side of Dyer Bay, on forested east facing slopes along
coast, mid-portion of “Blue Trail” on largest rock
outcrop. Elevation about 150 feet. Acidic humus
pockets on granitic - gneissic outcrop, steep slope.
Coastal evergreen conifer forest (boreal forest),
dominated by Abies balsamea, Picea rubens, Betula
papyrifera, Acer pensylvanicum, Vaccinium
angustifolium. With mosses and lichens. Occasional
robust perennial fern with conspicuous erect-ascending
fronds in a rosette, 0.6-0.8 meter tall; fertile leaves
dried, senescent.
