TYPE. Steyermark 89698 (holotype, US; isotype, VEN), Sabana de Triana, Río Chicanán, 50 km southwest of El Dorado, Sierra de Lema, 6° 22' N, 61° 53' W, Bolívar, Venezuela, 1 Sep 1961.

Description
Description - Plant stemless or with short simple erect stem. Leaves about 20, rosulate; sheaths small, inconspicuous; blades spreading, linear, caudate-attenuate, slightly contracted toward the base, to 38 cm long, 17-30 mm wide, flat, green, covered on both sides with white appressed scales but soon glabrous above, laxly serrate with spreading nearly straight 2 mm long spines. Inflorescence central, sessile, simple, few-many-flowered, densely capitate; outer bracts few, subfoliaceous, reddish. Floral bracts very narrowly triangular, long-attenuate, ca 25 mm long, much exceeded by the sepals, entire, membranaceous, reddish, white-lepidote; pedicels stout, 5 mm long. Sepals very narrowly triangular, 35-40 mm long, ecarinate, thin; petals yellow with rose apex; ovary partly or wholly inferior; capsule thick-ovoid, 8 mm long.

Distribution
Wet or dry rocks in savanna or woodland, 300-700 m alt, Bolívar, Venezuela, and adjacent Guyana.
