Description
Species Description - Very small, single- or multi-stemmed plants of understory, 0.5-1.5 m X 4-7 mm, with 1-2 very slender, unarmed stems, the internodes 2-7 cm long. Leaves 3-10, more or less spirally arranged on upper part of stem; sheath glabrous, unarmed, tubular, 6-14 cm long; petiole green, slender, 5-22 cm long, usually unarmed; blade horizontally spreading deeply bifid (V-shaped), with a rachis 3-9 cm long and 2 segments, each segment elliptic to oblanceolate, slightly convex above, 12-32 X 3.5-7 cm. Inflorescences often several per plant, inter- and infrafoliar; peduncle 3-6 cm long, hairy, hidden by leaf sheath as well as by the prophyll 3-5 cm long; peduncular bract 8-13 cm long, the erect visible part 4-8 cm long, densely covered with black, erect, setae 2-5 mm long; rachillae 2 or 3(4), recurved, 2-5 cm long. Fruit globose, glabrous, 5-8 mm diam., orange at maturity.
Distribution and Ecology - Fl (Dec-Apr), fr (Apr-Nov); restricted to hillsides on granitic bedrock east of Saul (Mt. La Fumee, Mt. Belvedere, Pic Matecho).
