Description
Species Description - Tree 3.0-12.0 m tall; trunk up to 40.0 cm diam, armed with multiple spines up to 10.0 cm long. Branchlets slender, unarmed, tips (sub)glabrous, older parts early covered with brownish cork and paler elliptic lenticels. Leaves elliptic-oblong, apex obtusely acuminate for 1.5-2.5 cm, base broadly cuneate, with 1 or 2 small glands at the very base of the lamina, papery to chartaceous, (sub)glabrous, coarsely glandular-crenate-dentate (1.5-2.0, rarely -4.0 mm), (12.0-)14.0-22.0 cm long, (5.5-)6.5-8.0(-10.0) cm broad, lateral nerves 6-7 pairs curved-ascending, the upper 2 or 3 pairs only somewhat looping before the margin, a little prominent above, markedly so beneath, veins more or less transverse, slightly raised on both faces, reticulation of veinlets dense, finely prominent mainly beneath; petiole rather slender, (sub)glabrous, 5.0-10.0 mm long. [male and female] inflorescences many-flowered, [male] ones few-flowered fascicles, mainly from already defoliate axils; pedicels articulate above base, slender, puberulent, (2.0-)3.0-4.0 mm long in the [male], slightly longer in the [female]. Sepals 4 or 5, ovate-acuminate, sparsely short-pubescent or subglabrous on both faces, ciliate, yellowish, ca 1.5 mm long. Disk lobes ca 8, squamular. [male]: stamens 2030; filaments glabrous, ca 3.0 mm long. [female] ovary ovoid, glabrous; style very short, bifid, the reniform stigmas reflexed, flabellately lobed. Berry obovoid-subglobular, yellow to cherry-red, 1.5-2.0 cm long, 1.0-1.3 mm broad; seeds ca 10, ovoid-compressed, 4.0-5.0 mm long.
Distribution and Ecology - Amazonian Colombia, Venezuela, Guianas, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil; in forest, both in varzea and terra firme, also disturbed forest, gen¬erally at low elevations, rarely up to 1500 m alt.

Discussion
Close to X. benthamii and perhaps only a luxuriant form of it.
