Description:

Description: Low, few-branched, terrestrial (?) shrub; branches coarsely angled and ribbed, glabrous glaucous, brown when dry. Leaves lance-elliptic, (8.5-)11-17 x (3-)4.5-8 cm, basally cuneate or obtuse, apically acuminate, essentially glabrous but with marginal scattered capitate, glandular hairs to 1 mm; pinnatinerved with midrib impressed above and prominently raised beneath, lateral nerves and veinlets raised on both surfaces and veinlets obscure beneath; petioles subterete, coarsely rugose, glabrous, 8-15 mm long and 2-4 mm diameter. Inflorescence racemose, 13-23-flowered, flowers secund; rachis coarsely ribbed, glaucous, 11-26 cm, with scattered capitate, glandular hairs proximal one-fourth; floral bracts ovate, acute to acuminate, 4-6 x 2 mm, basally slightly clasping, lowest ones with laminas densely glandular pilose; pedicels coarsely angled and ribbed, glabrous, glaucous, (13-)15-20 mm long an 1.5-2 mm diam.; bracteoles ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, keeled, 4-4.5 x 1.5-2 mm, glabrous, glaucous, basally glandular-fimbriate margined, located at or just above middle of pedicel. Flowers with calyx stipitate (stipe to 1 mm), glabrous, glaucous, 10-11 mm long; hypanthium cylindric, rugose, slightly apophysate, 4.5-5.5 mm long; limb campanulate, 4.5-6 mm long; lobes triangular, 2-3 mm long; sinuses acute or obtuse; corolla cylindric, coriaceous, prominently nerved, glabrous, glaucous, 27-30 mm long and 5-6 mm diameter, the lobes oblong, obtuse, reflexed at anthesis, 4 x 2 mm; stamens unequal, 8-9 mm long; filaments alternately either ca. 3.5 or 4.5 mm long, densely short-hirsute with tan hairs; anthers including tubules 6 mm long; thecae 5 mm long, granular; tubules ca. 1 mm long, dehiscing by strictly terminal, slightly flaring pores; style strongly exserted, 32-35 mm long. Berry not seen.

Distribution: Endemic to Mexico and known from only two collections. Rare and endangered.

Type: Mexico. Oaxaca: Comaltepec, Ixtlam, La Esperanza, 1524 m, 18 Apr 1970, MacDougall 606.S (holotype, NY).
