Description:

Species Description - Epiphytic shrub; mature branches terete, smooth, glabrate, brown; twigs terete, smooth, reddish-brown, densely hispid with white hairs to 4 mm long. Leaves elliptic to ovate-elliptic, 8-13 X 3.5-5.5 cm, basally rounded, apically abruptly acuminate, densely hispid beneath with hairs to 2 mm long, scattered pilose above; 3(-5)-plinerved with midrib, lateral nerves, and primary veins impressed and conspicuous above but raised beneath, veinlets slightly raised above but obscure beneath; petioles terete, rugose, 5 mm long and 2 mm diam., densely hispid with tan hairs to 3 mm long. Inflorescence 6-flowered; rachis terete, striate, densely hispid, ca. 2.5 cm long and ca. 2 mm diam.; floral bracts lanceolate, acuminate, 16-23 x 4-6 mm, long-ciliate and scattered pilose on lamina with hairs to 2 mm long; pedicels swollen distally, striate, densely hispid, 8-12 mm long; bracteoles lacking. Flowers: calyx densely hispid, 13-13.5 mm long, pink (fide label data); hypanthium spherical, 3.5-4.5 mm long and broad, basally nonapophysate; limb short-cylindric or spreading, 9-9.5 mm long; lobes linear-lanceolate, acute, 8 mm long and 2 mm broad, erect after anthesis, marginally with 3-4 gland-tipped fimbriae on each side; sinus acute; corolla (past anthesis) cylindric, ca. 20 mm long, scattered pilose with hairs densest at lobe tips; stamens ca. 16 mm long; filaments alternately ca. 1 mm and 3 mm long; anthers alternately ca. 15 mm and 13 mm long; thecae 3-4 mm long; style ca. 21 mm long. Berry not seen.

Discussion:

Cavendishia gentryi is distinguished by its densely hispid stems, leaves, petioles, rachis, pedicels, and calyx, abruptly acuminate leaves, few-flowered inflorescences, long pedicels which are seemingly ebracteolate, and linear-lanceolate calyx lobes.

The type collection is in late flower and the corolla and staminal measurements have been taken from a somewhat shriveled flower; more collections are required before I can be certain of its affinities within the genus. In the globose, nonapophysate hypanthium and elongate limb of the calyx it resembles allenii and C. darienensis, and for the present I place it close to these species.
