Description:

Pileus 3-7 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dry, tomentose to subtomentose, finely areolate with age, dark ruby (12E6) when young and/or immature, sometimes with tan patches interspersed, becoming reddish brown to mahogany brown (8E8-7-6) with age but still retaining some of the ruby tints (near 9D5), with margin sometimes incurved/sublobed when young, and with a slight sterile margin with age. Flesh white, unchanging, up to 2 cm thick, with mild pungent odor and bitter taste. Tubes adnate to depressed around stipe, up to 1 cm long, white when young, pale pinkish with age; pores concolorous, staining pale pinkish brown when bruised, 2/mm. Stipe 5-11.5 cm long, 8-20 mm broad, equal to subclavate, dry, reticulate up to 1/2 the length, concolorous with immature pores at apex when young, a light orange (5A-B5) below and brown (7E8-7-6) below toward a white base, with age, the light orange dominates at apex and the brown is below, remaining white at base; interior white, unchanging, solid.
