Description:

This is the little Tylopilus with violet brown in pileus from under the big oaks. Pileus 3.5-4.5 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dry, subtomentose, violet brown (10E-F6-5) when young, mahogany red (8E6-5) with age. Flesh white, unchanging, up to 1 cm thick, with mild odor and taste. Tubes adnexed to deeply depressed around stipe, up to 7 mm deep, white at first, soon developingpale pink colors, pale brown when exposed, with pores concolorous and changing likewise, up to 2 per mm. Stipe 5.5-6 cm long, 5-10 mm broad, subclavate, dry, subpruinose to streaked, yellow at apex, pinkish brown below, white at base, developing olivaceous colors from handling, with interior white as in pileus.
