    Taxonomic Coverage: Vascular plants, bryophytes, algae, fungi, lichens, myxomycetes. Significant collections of Cyperaceae and Orchidaceae.

  • Quarantine Requirements

    All incoming specimens from overseas require previous coordination. Incoming dry specimens are frozen for a minimum of 5 days before entering the collections. Fresh (live) material is not allowed inside the collection rooms.

  • Notes

    Please do not send specimens from overseas as gifts or intended exchanges without previous coordination (all biological specimens that enter Costa Rica now require a special import permit). Historical account of the USJ Herbarium published in Revista de Biología Tropical 60: 1641-1648 (2012). Several hundred specimens destroyed by fire in 1965. Several hundred specimens damaged by water in 2007, but were successfully repaired (see Morales in Cuadernos de Investigación UNED 5: 181-184. 2013). In 2020 the custody and administration of the USJ Herbarium were transferred from the Escuela de Biología to the Centro de Investigación en Biodiversidad y Ecología Tropical (CIBET), although it remains in the same building.
